What Is Virkon®?

Rowan Burgess |

Virkon® is a multi-purpose and versatile disinfectant and cleaning agent with numerous uses. It's suitable for many locations, including farms, stables, and any enterprise that keeps animals.

With several advantages over competing products and its distinctive pink tinge, this product is a long-term friend to many stockkeepers, vets, and farmers. As a bonus, it smells great when it's diluted!

Easy to use and with a long shelf life, read on to discover everything you need to know about enhancing biosecurity for your premises via Virkon®.

What Is Virkon® Used For?

Virkon® is a DEFRA-approved disinfectant used on the farm to manage biosecurity, killing over half a million virus strains, including Avian Influenza, Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Newcastle disease, Salmonella, and Campylobacter.

Multi-purpose, this potent powder can disinfect whole buildings, surfaces, and equipment and can be added to foot and wheel dips.

What Is Virkon® Made Of?

Virkon® contains an oxidising agent called potassium peroxymonosulfate, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, a detergent, and sulfamic acid, a cleaning agent.

It also contains a surfactant, which means the product combines both cleaning and disinfection in one operation.

What Forms of Virkon® Are Available?

Virkon® H2O

Avoid the cost and residues of antibiotics in fowl flocks by using H2O, a unique formulation designed specifically for poultry drinking systems

Use this routinely instead of antibiotics, during antibiotic or feed additive withdrawal periods, and increased flock stress. You can also use this product for routine disinfection of a drinking water system between flocks.

Virkon® S Sachets

Virkon® S is the latest disinfectant formulation and comes in handy sachets ideal for smallholders, hobby keepers, or organic units with a lower stocking density.

Divided into simple measures, you can easily make the right amount, so there's no waste.

These sachets offer the same incredible versatility across equipment, housing, and water systems. Plus, they have a long shelf life, so they won't go out of date even with occasional use.

Virkon® S Tubs

For large flocks and commercial livestock units requiring regular disinfection at scale, Virkon® S 10kg tubs are the ideal choice.

Larger tubs represent the best value and offer the same reassurance of 100% disinfection and complete biosecurity.

Virkon® S Tablets

Tablets are ideal for trigger spray bottles to keep surfaces 100% clean in low-volume situations like farm shops and dairies or where there's a continuous requirement for frequent small-scale spraying. They're also perfect for disinfectant foot dips.

One tablet makes 500ml of solution and dissolves easily in tap water.

Virkon® LSP

This enhanced and specialist product is designed to eliminate bacteria and fungi in various settings and temperatures and the presence of organic material and debris.

Use LSP for wheel and boot dips, thermal fogging, and regular spray applications to surfaces and equipment.

Why You Should Choose Virkon®

Optimal Performance

Virkon® performs at lower temperatures than competitor products and remains effective in hard water areas and on porous surfaces, coping with the presence of organic material with no loss of efficacy.

Save Time and Money

Virkon® cleans and disinfects in one operation, so operators can combine two tasks, saving time and money.

Promote Biosecurity

There's no need to pre-clean before disinfecting, reducing the potential risk of spreading disease during the pre-cleaning process and combining the two operations for enhanced safety and biosecurity.

Love the Environment

Virkon® is biodegradable and environmentally friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Virkon® Need To Be Rinsed Off?

There is no need to rinse wood, concrete, glass, fibreglass, plastics, or rubber. Just let the product dry naturally.

Always apply the solution whilst wearing full protective clothing and equipment. If the liquid accidentally touches your skin, rinse it off immediately.

Does Virkon® Need To Be Diluted?

This product should have a dilution ratio of 1:100 for routine cleaning and disinfecting, so that's 10g of powder per one litre of water.

However, dilution can depend on which form of the product you're using, so always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

How Long Is Virkon® Effective For?

Virkon® works within ten minutes of application, but the recommended contact time is one hour for complete security.

Use routinely for stock rotation as part of regular disinfection protocols and always during disease outbreaks. The powder has a shelf life of three years, and the dilute solution lasts around two weeks.

Is Virkon® Pet Safe?

This pleasant-smelling solution is a go-to product for farmers, vets, and zoos, so it protects pets and livestock and is safe to use in their environments.

However, following the recommended dilution proportions is essential. Likewise, don't reintroduce animals or use equipment until the product has visibly dried or been absorbed.
